Video Evaluation

For our music video recreation task, my group chose to do "This Is Gospel" by Panic! At The Disco. This was not a video I had ever seen before so first I had to familiarise myself with it. However this did not go to plan and we ended up doing "Lotus Flower" by Radiohead.

Before we started planning the video, we all assigned each other roles. I was in charge of getting various props, lyrics and timings, and casting as well as lighting on the actual shoot, Beth was in charge of the stroyboard and operating the camera whilst Elliot was also working on getting props and other miscellaneous roles. We took two lessons to plan everything (around 2 hours) and shot on the following Monday. However, when it came to shooting we didn't realise how difficult the whole thing was. Getting a steady camera movement was incredibly difficult even with a crane supporting it. Another problem we had later on was that our takes were simply too long. Beth didn't stop recording between takes so our clips were around 3-6 minutes long, with one take 18 minutes long. We realised we HAD to re-shoot another day but non of us were free at the same times.

As well as the takes being too long and incredibly bad, another problem we faced was getting hold of many props featured in the video. I managed to get surgical scrubs, gloves and masks yet we couldn't find oxygen masks and scalpels etc that wouldn't put us out of pocket.

The following Thursday, Elliot and I decided to change video. This was we only had two weekdays to film and edit the video. "This Is Gospel" was no longer possible to do. We realised we needed to do something fairly simple that we could film in one hour. We searched the internet until we came across "Lotus Flower". The video features Thom Yorke dancing. We realised we could do this. I quickly managed to change casting to someone more willing and brave to do such a stupid dance.

In our next lesson Elliot worked on the storyboard whilst I did the choreography, figured out lighting, and got hold of the new props. We then decided how to film it. The best way to do it was to film the whole thing three times at the three different angles, shooting three takes of each angle. When shooting we managed to get everything done within 45 minutes. This was because we now fully knew how we were going film it.

However, yet an other problem occurred. We needed to edit on a particular mac, yet this mac was not free all day. The only option left was for me to stay behind and do the editing myself. Nearly all was done that night apart from the mp3 file needed to be added. Elliot came in early the following morning to finish the project.

The thing we learnt most from our project was time management. We did not plan our first video enough and did not have enough time to film it. However, this meant we learnt from our mistakes so that when  it came to Lotus Flower, we knew exactly what we were doing. This is also something I will learn from if I do a similar project for A2 media

What I like most about our final product is that it was finished. Our biggest worry was actually finishing the project so it's a real success that we finished. What I like least about our product is that it's rather minimalist. Other videos had a lot more work put into whereas ours was just a guy dancing in room. I feel as though I could have done a more adventurous video if I/we had planned it enough.

In conclusion, I am pleased with the final product. However I feel I could have done a lot better if I/we had planned more realistically and not picked such a difficult video to work on at the start.

Lotus Flower Lyrics and Actions

I will shape myself into your pocket
Invisible, do what you want, do what you want (arms up)
I will shrink and I will disappear (down)
I will slip into the groove (arm thing) and cut me up (stare at camera), and cut me up

MENTAL SHAKE

(down holding hart) There's an empty space inside my heart
Where the weeds take root
And now I'll set you free
I'll set you free (arm solo)
There's an empty space inside my heart
Where the weeds take root
Tonight I'll set you free
I'll set you free

Lotus Flower

We HAD to change the video due to lack of planning and an overambitious goal.

We're going to do "lotus flower" by Radiohead because it wont take too long to storyboard, film or edit.

Problem

Our chosen music video we are recreating will be too difficult. We didn't realize how hard it would be to get the right camera movements and all of the movements that the actors do. We're faced with such a big problem in such little time that we may have to chose another video.

Lyrics

This is gospel for the fallen ones
Locked away in permanent slumber
Assembling their philosophies
From pieces of broken memories

Oh, this is the beat of my heart, this is the beat of my heart [x2]
The gnashing teeth and criminal tongues conspire against the odds
But they haven’t seen the best of us yet

If you love me let me go
If you love me let me go
‘Cause these words are knives and often leave scars
The fear of falling apart
And truth be told, I never was yours
The fear, the fear of falling apart
